Obesity Is An Increasing
Problem
Obesity is an increasing problem in the western world
which leads to a variety of health problems including
high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes,
high blood lipids, an increased risk of developing certain
cancers, sleep apnoea, gastro-oesophageal reflux and
arthritis. The bottom line is that as far as your health
is concerned being overweight is not good for you.
The reason obesity develops is that the number of calories
taken in is greater than the number burnt up during
daily activity. And it does not take many extra calories
to put on weight. Ten extra calories taken each day
will lead, over a year, to a weight gain of one kilogram.
We all know the answer to the problem, eat less and
exercise more. However, in spite of the apparent simplicity
of the solution it does not seem an effective way of
maintaining weight control in the long term for many
people. It is not uncommon for people to be able to
loose significant amounts of weight whilst dieting only
to find that they put it all back on again over the
following months.
